The lamp was developed in collaboration with William Lane &amp; Sons foundry - whose history goes back to the industrial revolution - as a way to celebrate this neglected material and heritage. This is reflected in the form of the lamp; for example, in the way the scalloped fluting on the base acknowledges the classical references often employed in cast iron structures. While there is a heft and raw materiality to the lamp, it emits a surprisingly intimate light. The project invited designers to interpret the history of Aydon Castle, a 13th century fortified manor house in Northumberland, through a series of contemporary objects. The project culminated with a public exhibition at the castle - Re-imagining Aydon - which ran from June to October 2022.&nbsp; The brief asked designers to interpret the history, setting and atmosphere of the site. Influenced by the thinking of archaeologist, Michael Shanks, the objects are conceived as polytemporal in character - a blending of time periods in the aesthetics, materials, methods and typologies. Each object is inspired by the site itself - abstracting from the material fabric of the building - or derived from insights into historic typologies or practices of making. The plinths were developed as part of &nbsp;the Material &amp; Memory exhibition at Brinkburn Priory, Northumberland (July - November 2024). Brinkburn Priory is a restored gothic priory and semi-derelict manor house, set in a tranquil loop of the Coquet river in rural Northumberland. Participaing designers were asked to respond to the stories and historic fabric of the building and its picturesque surrounds.&nbsp;The pieces owe their form to the tapered profiles of the stone mullioned windows. The profile, when used in windows, allows increased light to enter while reducing the visual heft of the stone element. Reproduced in furniture, the form is vernacular yet feels simultaneously contemporary.The pieces also refer to the exchange of knowledge and practice between stone masons and early carpenters, prior to the advent of furniture makers as a distinct profession. Carpenters would often borrow techniques from masons, even if the material properties of stone and timber were quite different. This included the mason’s mitre, a way of joining stone elements at right angles, visually reproduced in the Mullion plinths by the way the profiles meet..Two versions were shown as part of the exhibition. A low, three-legged version in pine. The subtle pink finish, using eco-friendly oils, references the faded pinks found in paint and wallpaper remnants seen on site. It is at once minimal but friendly. The waxed aluminium finish &nbsp;has a surprising softness to the touch and despite its raw appearance, the lamp offers a welcoming quality of light. The armature comprises a 35mm stock aluminium tube. This is large enough to house a rechargeable battery and provides a pleasing dimension to hold when carrying. The tube also accommodates a counter-weight to add stability. Illumination is provided by a replaceable G4 LED bulb.
