Aydon series 2022
Aydon is a body of work created as part of a project with English Heritage, a national charity charged with the care of over 400 historic sites.
The project invited designers to interpret the history of Aydon Castle, a 13th century fortified manor house in Northumberland, through a series of contemporary objects. The project culminated with a public exhibition at the castle - Re-imagining Aydon - which ran from June to October 2022.
The brief asked designers to interpret the history, setting and atmosphere of the site. Influenced by the thinking of archaeologist, Michael Shanks, the objects are conceived as polytemporal in character - a blending of time periods in the aesthetics, materials, methods and typologies.
Each object is inspired by the site itself - abstracting from the material fabric of the building - or derived from insights into historic typologies or practices of making.
The project is part of an ongoing series of collaborations with English Heritage.
