Flicker 2015

Flicker is an LED lamp which responds to air currents in the room. The concept sought to capture the way the movement of candlelight helps us to register, often subconsciously, changes in the environment – a door opening, a breeze through a window.

The concept employs a wind sensor coupled to an Arduino board. With programming to modulate the effect, an RGB LED dims and brightens in response to air currents passing across the sensor. the light should respond to air currents in a way that seems natural and without obvious technical mediation. An array of addressable LEDs produces movement of light and shadow to create a sense of  ‘flickering’ as normally observed in candle flames ‘dancing’ in turbulent air.
